The bag is the first argument of the night, and it is a boring one. A good outfit can still lose the opening because the door does not like the hardware on a tote. Texas rooms are not all running the same rulebook, but they are all running a rulebook. The bag that gets through is the one that looks like it came for a show, not like it came to relocate.
Read the venue page the day the ticket is bought, not in the rideshare. Moody Center, Toyota Center, and the football buildings mean clear bag, and they mean it. ACL Live, Emo’s, Stubb’s, and Warehouse Live will still stop a backpack that looks like luggage. A house show will stop a weekender with nowhere to put it. The policy is not personal. The line behind the check is personal. Nobody in that line asked to watch a packing dispute.
Clear stadium tote
Ugly. Fine. Toyota Center and AT&T Stadium publish the same speech: 12 by 6 by 12 if it is clear, or a clutch small enough to count as a wallet. A backpack is a no. A promotional grocery bag that does not zip will lose something in the lot. Pay for a tote that actually closes. The guard can see the plugs, the battery, and the lip in two seconds. That is the point.
The little clutch
Moody Center will take it if the tote is refused. Cards, ID, phone if it fits. That is the list. A regular purse slumps. They will call it a tote. They will be right.
Club bag
Small. One zipper. Plugs, a compact if the room is in a mood to allow it, cards. Stubb’s, Emo’s, Echo Lounge, South Side, and Bayou Music Center will dump whatever arrives on a table. If the zipper fights, the line waits while lip gloss rolls toward somebody’s keys. A crossbody that opens with one hand ends that scene. The leather tote that looks like it came from an office stays in the car.
When they hate bags
Some rooms decide nobody is carrying anything. A vest with zippers solves that night. It looks a little serious. Serious is better than a pile by the door. Check the site the morning of. Memory is not a policy.
If the door sends a bag back, do not perform shock. The policy was posted. Walk to wherever they said — car, locker, hotel — and come back without a speech. The night is still available. The speech is not going to change the sign.
