The Galaxy Z Fold 8 has been the compact book on people’s radar since Samsung showed it in July. On sale August 7. About 5.5 inches closed, 7.6 open, $1,899.99 for 256 GB. Two hundred and one grams. A booklet, not a tall sandwich. Reviewers have been saying the hinge makes you want to open it. That is the phone people have been sending each other.
Wednesday, Apple put iPhone Duo on the same silhouette. 5.4 closed, 7.6 open, passport-shaped, $1,999, October 23. The foldable argument is no longer “will Apple do it.” It is two books, a hundred dollars, and a month.
Same homework
Both are wide when you open them. Both skip a real telephoto — Duo’s 48-megapixel main does an optical-quality 2x crop; Fold 8 is dual 50-megapixel, main and ultrawide. Both want to be the phone you watch something on and the phone you still text with one hand. Fold 8 is already in a Best Buy case. Duo is a keynote and a pre-order date. The launch filing is here.
Where they split
Dust and water: Apple is advertising IP68. Fold 8 is IP48. That is the line Cupertino will use in every sink demo. Software: iOS 27 Split View versus Android 17 and Samsung’s promise of seven OS updates. Color: Fold 8 comes in lavender, graphite, cream, pistachio. Duo is titanium in star white or night sky. Repair: a hinge is a hinge. Neither company will make the first drop cheap.
Samsung already sold a taller Ultra if you wanted last year’s Fold shape and a 200-megapixel camera. That is not the phone people have been arguing about. The argument is the compact book.
The honest part
If you already carry a Fold 8, Duo is not a reason to trade in October unless the rest of your life is already an Apple cable. If you have been waiting for Apple to fold, you are waiting for the 23rd and paying extra for the rating and the store you already walk into. This desk has not unfolded either next to a Stubb’s ticket. Spec sheets do not get a night. The Fold 8 has had weeks in the world. Duo has a stage. That gap is the story until somebody actually closes it after a show.
