Apple folded the iPhone. Wednesday’s event was called Surprise and Shine. New CEO John Ternus walked the first foldable — iPhone Duo — a passport-shaped book that opens to 7.6 inches and starts at $1,999. The slab is still on the table. iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199. Pro Max at $1,299. Those pre-order Saturday. The hinge waits until October.
Closed, Duo is a 5.4-inch outer screen Apple says is 90 percent of the 18 Pro’s area. Open, the inner display is 50 percent larger than 18 Pro Max. Same aspect ratio both ways, so the picture is not supposed to jump when you crack it. Grade 5 titanium. Star white or night sky. IP68. Touch ID in the side button. No Action button. A20 Pro chip, a vapor chamber, a dual battery. A FaceTime camera sitting under the inner glass until a call needs it.
The rest of the table shipped on a normal Apple clock: Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, AirPods 5, iOS 27 on Monday the 14th. Duo pre-orders October 16. In stores October 23. The $79 USB-C Pencil works. Pencil Pro does not.
The two-thousand-dollar hinge
Samsung has been selling this shape. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 — compact, 7.6 inside, a booklet in the hand — has been on people’s radar since July and on sale since August 7. Apple arrived at the same passport and asked a hundred dollars more for the logo and a dust rating the Fold 8 does not have. That comparison is a separate filing. The launch fact is simpler: Cupertino decided the fold is no longer a curiosity.
How it lands
This desk has not closed a Duo in a room. Nobody has. The phone is six weeks out. What we have is the pitch: Split View, two apps at once on iPhone for the first time; a phone that stands up for FaceTime; Kid Cue animations on the outer screen so a child looks at the lens. Ternus called it the most transformational change since the original iPhone. That is what you say when you are late to a category and need the late to sound like invention.
The Texas question is the pocket and the bill. Two thousand dollars before tax, before a case, before the first repair on a hinge Apple says is more than a hundred parts. 18 Pro is the phone most people will actually buy on the 18th. Duo is the one they will argue about in the line. If you needed Apple to bless the fold before you spent the money, you have the blessing. You still wait until the 23rd to see whether the crease is a talking point or a line you can feel.
