Stop Calling It a Throwback

They keep calling Juvenile a throwback. Mary too. Any bill that runs the catalog like we all went somewhere and came back.

I was in San Antonio when Juvenile ran the 99 and the 2000s. The room did not come for a museum. The room came because those records never left the car. Ha still hits because it still hits. That is not nostalgia. That is a catalog that did not expire.

Moody Center when Mary did No More Drama. Grown folks night. Mario, Ne-Yo, then her. People sang like they had been waiting in kitchens for that one. I have heard that song my whole life. Hearing it in that room was not a reunion. It was a continuation.

Press talks like we left. Like Cash Money is a costume now. I am 33. I did not pause. The cousins in that San Antonio room did not pause. Houston did not pause.

Call it a tour. Call it a night. Stop calling it a throwback like we had to be invited back into our own music.

Moody Studios

Jasmine. Austin. Live music, Black culture, and whatever I actually sat through. I write like I was in the room because I was.

I Can Count Us

Some Austin rooms I can count. Houston does not make me do that math. I still live here.
