The show is the appointment. The afters are whether the night keeps any blood in it. Standing in a rideshare lot refreshing an app is not an after. It is a queue with worse lighting.
Most rooms kick a crowd out at 11 like they finished something. Decide the second room before the encore, not after. A kitchen that is still open. A bar that does not require a second ticket. A porch if the night was a house show and the host said stay. Texas cities will feed a crowd after 11 if the address is already known. They will not invent a good room on the curb.
Austin, Houston, Dallas
Austin after Stubb’s is a patio or home. Everybody had the same idea. This city folds earlier than the set did. Houston will still be open. Bayou Music Center lets out and the night is not required to be done — a plate, a second room, or not, and that is also fine. Dallas after South Side is the parking lot first. Then the decision. Hotel is correct. Not calling it is also correct. Feet decide more than pride.
If the night was an arena, get away from the arena. The official afters attached to the building are designed for the same crowd just left. A better room is usually a few blocks farther and half as proud of itself. Walk if the next place is close enough that the walk is part of the night. Drive if someone stayed sober enough to mean it. Do not put six people in a car that holds four because the lot felt urgent.
Go home when the next room would only be more noise. That is a real time. It is not a moral. A good after is short enough that Monday still exists. A bad after is how a good bill becomes a blur that cannot be recommended because the third song is gone. The encore is a door, not a wall. Walk through it like that was the plan.
