The flyer says 9. The address is a street most people have driven past on the way to a club they paid to stand in. The door is a regular door. Nobody is scanning a barcode. The night still has rules. They just were not printed on a ticket, because there is no ticket.
A house show is not a small club. A club has a manager, a security line, and a reason the neighbors cannot do much about the volume after a certain hour. A house has a lease, a landlord, and a living room that has to go back to being a living room when the last car leaves. If the night goes well, the band plays again. If it goes badly, the next flyer never goes up. That is the whole ethic. Treat the room like the next one depends on it.
The living room is the room
Stand where the music is. The kitchen is for water and a short conversation. The hallway is for walking through. The bedroom with the closed door is not a green room. If the host said the backyard is the smoking area, the backyard is the smoking area. If they said shoes off, shoes come off. The house is doing the venue’s job for one night. It does not owe anyone a full bar and a coat check.
Talk between songs. During a song, stay quiet enough that the person who drove across town can hear the band they came for. Phone light belongs in a pocket. If the band wants the night filmed, they will say so. A living room is not a content set. The neighbors did not agree to be in the background of a story.
The door is not a club
If the flyer said the door is $10, bring $10. Cash still solves more of these nights than an app. If the host is collecting at the door, that money is rent, the PA, and the band eating after. It is not a suggestion. Do not argue the price down because the room is small. The room being small is why the night exists.
If there is a list, a name is on it or it is not. Texting the host from the porch because a name is close to a name is how a living room becomes a fire hazard. If the night is full, leave. There will be another flyer. There will not be another living room if this one gets shut down.
The street is part of the show
Park like a person who has to live on this block on Monday. Do not take both sides of a narrow street. Do not idle with the bass on. Do not slam doors at 1 a.m. like the neighborhood is a loading zone. House-show streets in Austin and Houston get one or two loud nights before somebody calls it in. The call is never about the band. It is about the cars and the porch.
Leave when the set is over unless the host said stay. Help carry a cab if asked. Do not start a second night in the front yard. The neighbors already heard the first one.
How the night holds
There will not be a recap email. There might be another address, a week later, in a group chat. That is the review. The night worked because the house is still a house and the band can still play living rooms. Everything else is decoration.
