LOVB Austin Survives Madison in Five

There is a specific kind of volleyball that only happens in a fifth set. The score resets, the crowd gets louder than it’s been all night, and every single point feels like it costs something. LOVB Austin found that version of themselves on Friday and it was worth the three sets it took to get there.

Austin took down LOVB Madison 25–19, 14–25, 23–25, 25–20, 15–13 in a match that had no business being that tense and was better for it. The win moves them to 6–5 on the season.

Madison came out swinging in sets two and three and for a stretch it looked like Austin might not make it out of Cedar Park with anything. They dropped the second set badly, surrendered the third in a fight, and had to dig themselves out of an early hole in the fourth before pulling away late. But the team didn’t panic — and if you watched the fifth set you could see why.

Madisen Skinner was the reason. The second-year opposite hitter finished with 26 points, 22 kills, three blocks, and an ace, and was named Player of the Match for a performance that earned it. She went 7-for-7 on kills in the first set at .500 efficiency and showed up again when it actually mattered in the fifth, closing things out alongside middle blocker Molly McCage as Austin scraped out a 15–13 win.

Skinner was quick to point elsewhere after the match. “All the credit goes to her,” she said of setter Brie O’Reilly, who controlled the tempo throughout and made sure Austin’s middles were a consistent threat. That kind of accountability is also part of why this team wins fifth sets.

Assistant coach Rob Browning said it plainly: “None of the coaches could show up and the team would play great.” That’s a statement about a team that knows who it is when it counts. Friday night at Cedar Park, Austin proved it.
