What It Actually Felt Like
I came to this one late because hype makes me skeptical and the hype turned out to be right, which is always satisfying. McFadden has a specific style that I’m learning to recognize the tight pacing, reveals that land in the right order, characters who do bad things you partially understand and this is where that style clicks into full gear.
The twists are earned. The pacing doesn’t sag. I understood exactly why people blow through this series after this one.
The Honest Part
The characters are somewhat thin beyond their plot function. This is a thriller that prioritizes the ride over depth. That’s a trade-off that works but it’s real.
